Joyce Barefield, of Lake Jackson, passed away peacefully at her home on January 15, 2024, following a brief illness. She was surrounded by family and friends.
Joyce was born in Kenedy, Texas, and attended school there as well as in Manor, Texas where she was a star basketball player. She graduated from Southwest Texas Teachers College (Texas State University) and did post graduate work at the University of Texas - Austin. She taught at Lake Jackson Intermediate for thirty four years.
Joyce was a proud descendent of Reuben Hornsby, one of the original Austin settlers in Texas, and a longtime member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. An avid golfer, she recorded a hole-in-one at Riverside Country Club. She enjoyed attending sporting events and fishing with her late husband, Charles Barefield. Joyce was a long time Texas Longhorn supporter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Barefield; her parents, Ed and Elizabeth Stafford; and brother-in-law, William Barber.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Shields (Clark) and their daughter Kathleen Weibel (Wes) and family. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Barber of San Marcos; nephews Clay Barber (Jessica) and family of Arkansas, and Bob Barber (Rachael) and family of New Braunfels.
Special thanks to the many friends who reached out to Joyce during her illness. She treasured each visit, call, text and email. She'll be waiting on you with a Crown and Seven in her hand.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Alkesh Amin and his staff for their expertise and compassion over the years. Thank you to the personnel from Help, Inc. and IPH hospice for providing support during her final days.
Services are planned for Thursday, January 25, 2024 at Lake Jackson First United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM. Service will begin at 11:30 AM. Following the service, there will be a private interment. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Joyce's memory to the Lake Jackson First United Methodist Church, 404 Azalea St., Lake Jackson, TX 77566 or online at ljfumc.org or to a charity of your choice.

We are very sorry for your loss. Joyce added joy to my little time that we knew each other. The Barber family, including Joyce, made me feel like family and I loved all of you.

We were fortunate to have attended high school with Joyce in Manor where her father was the school superintendent. Joyce was not only a great basketball player but a wonderful person to know. Our condolences to her family.
