He was the eldest son of ten siblings. As a young child his life was very hard trying to help his mother in providing for his brothers and sisters. He worked in the fields from dawn to dusk, with no time to attend school. He said, "back then school days were few and far in-between." He only completed the third grade, but his determination to learn was never lacking, because he knew that education would "someday" make his life easier.
At age 18, our father left to Colorado in 1941 to join the CCE. He told us being stationed in Colorado was hard because it was so cold, but he got "three square meals a day."
He met the love of his life and married Longina "Kina" Ortegon on April 13, 1946, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Kingsville, Texas. They met at a dance, although Mom was there with another young man, Dad made his move. They completed 69 years of marriage. He was at Mom's side all during her lengthy illness with cancer. When our Mother's health improved, they enjoyed dancing, and traveling around the states and abroad.
Dad was employed with Union Pacific Railroad in Kingsville, employed there 15 years. He moved to Freeport in 1959, and joined the Painter's Union. He worked at all the surrounding chemical plants for more than 35 years. He was highly respected for his workmanship as a painter and sandblaster. He retired at the age of 62, but continued to work at Leo Martin driving cars, painting houses, and doing odd jobs for his neighbors and friends. He loved staying busy, or just being in his garage tinkering. Hunting was our father's love of the outdoors, so he purchased a small ranch in Speaks, Texas. There was nothing he enjoyed more than being out in the woods by himself.
His sense of humor and giving of himself was endless. Dad was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He only wanted the best for each of us. Even when Alzheimer's started to take away his beautiful mind, he would have days that he would make you laugh out loud. Thank you for all the beautiful memories. We will never stop loving and missing you!
He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Inez Naranjo; loving son, Hector; and brothers, Adalberto, Pedro, and David Naranjo.
He is survived by his loving wife, "Kina"; his son, Ovidio Naranjo and his wife, Roberta, from Freeport, Texas; his daughter, Delia and her husband, Luis, of Lake Jackson; his four grandchildren, Christopher, Gabriel, Jeremy Naranjo, and Elizabeth Flores; five sisters, Lubina Baldiviar, Esther Lopez (Serapio), Aldelfa Naranjo, Angelita Flores, Cruz Serna (Richard); and brother, Oralio Naranjo (Maria).
Visitation will be held at Lakewood Funeral Chapel on Sunday, February 21, 2016, at 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Star of the Sea of Freeport, Texas, on Monday, February 22, 2016, at 10:00 a.m., followed by cemetery service at Restwood.
