George D Payne peacefully joined our Lord February 29, 2016. He was born in Hamilton, Texas to Bertie and Dennis Payne October 31, 1921. Raised on a depression-era farm, he worked long hours to finish plowing the family and neighbor's fields, operating a tractor by lantern light before leaving to join the service. He served his country during WWII in the Army Air Corp. Initially serving as a gunner on bombers, he was transferred to ground support because of color blindness, leading a crew of armorers keeping P-47s in the battle from close behind the lines from the D-Day landings to the defeat of Germany. He served in Europe in Normandy (D-Day), Northern France, the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and Central Europe. He married Edith Marie Hudgins on December 18, 1945 and they became as devoted a couple as one could hope to meet.

He is preceded in death by Edith.

He was employed f! or 36 years at Dow Chemical Co., starting out as an operator and eventually becoming an Instrumentation Supervisor in the Power Department. He was a kind and respected gentleman.Left to cherish his memories are children Barry (Lorri), David (Marilyn), and Georgiann (Dennis), 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday afternoon at 6:00pm -8:00pm @ Lakewood Chapel. His life will be celebrated in a Memorial Service, Friday March 4, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Lakewood Chapel, Lake Jackson, Texas.

May God comfort you at this time and may all the wonderful memories of your father bring joy and laughter and peace. My memories of him are of a kind man who was Georgiann's Daddy, always friendly but quiet in a way. Our family was blessed by his presence when he attended our brother Mike , our Mother and our Daddys funerals---- it touched our hearts and we never will forget his sweet presence. Praying for all your family. Love, Susan (and Sandra)
