Lilla Sue Flake, age 90, of Lake Jackson, Texas, passed away on December 16, 2016, after a long illness, during which she exhibited the patience, grace and strength that her family has always known from her. She managed to make them laugh and helped bring them even closer together to celebrate milestone events like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and birthdays at her bedside, when wonderful memories were shared. She cherished her family, and they cherished her. Sue Flake was born on July 29, 1926, to Lucy and Orrin C. Goodwin of Corsicana, Texas. She picked berries on the family farm to help buy a piano, which would change her life. She met her husband Ray on a tennis court at Baylor University, where she was studying piano and music theory, and it was love at first sight for Ray. Music remained a big part of Sue's life, as she passed along her love of music to her children and grandchildren. She played piano and organ for the First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson, where she and Ray were members for 60 years and stalwart members of Sunday School. Sue served as president of the local Women's Medical Auxiliary. In addition to music, her skills and passions included gardening, knitting, sewing, and quilting. She made the best pies her children have ever tasted. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Raymond Everett Flake, her daughters Carol Flake Chapman; Ellen Walters and her husband Glen; Kathleen Morton and her husband Brad; by her son Cary Flake and his wife Teresa; by her grandchildren Chase Walters, Madison Walters, Matt Morton, Amy Kelly, Cassie Flake, Katie Echols, Kori Flake, Christopher Flake, Collin Flake, and Carson Flake; and by her great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Lucy and Orrin Goodwin; her sister Muriel Bounds; and brothers Edwin and Milton Goodwin. The family will receive friends 6pm until 8pm Monday at the First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson. Services will be held 2pm Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson, Burial will immediately follow the service at Restwood Memorial Park in Lake Jackson.Pallbearers will be Matt Morton, Chase Walters, Christopher Flake, Collin Flake, Blain Echols, and Bobby Weaver. Sue's family would like to extend special thanks to the caregivers at Country Village, who treated her like family and made her feel at home. Arrangements by the Turner Family.
