Doris Mildred (Bolduc) Hickner went to eternal rest on Saturday morning, February 11th, 2017, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Doris was born in Berwyn (Chicago), Illinois on October 6th 1936 and lived her early years in Oak Park, Illinois before moving to San Pierre, Indiana to the family farm where she lived until she went off to college. Doris was the oldest daughter of Paul and Helen Bolduc where she was an active member of the Catholic Church, and a member of the Four H club. After graduating high school, she attended Purdue University to study Home Economics where she met her future husband Richard "Dick" Hickner at the Newman Catholic Student Center. Doris and Dick were married on August 4th, 1956 while she was an undergraduate and he was in his second year of graduate school. The first child, Matthew Richard, was born four days before their first anniversary. After Dick finished graduate school in April 1958, they moved to Midland, Michigan where he began his career in research with Dow Chemical. They would welcome six more children, daughters Bridget, Kristen, Jean, and sons Andrew, Allan, and Edward. While living in Midland, Doris finished her Bachelors of Science degree as she commuted to Central Michigan University, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan on a daily basis. She also volunteered at the children's school and acted as a den mother with the Cub Scouts. Doris and Dick moved their family to Lake Jackson, Texas in 1972 where she joined the Catholic Community of Saint Michaels and was an active member for many years. She volunteered with the Boy Scouts and at the children's schools. Along with her husband, Doris spent 15 years at the Texas Mid Coast Wildlife Refuges educating the minds of school children of all ages to the great outdoors. Doris was a teacher both as a substitute for BISD and a part-time teacher at Brazoswood and Brazosport High Schools. She was also the Director of Religious Education for Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Lake Jackson, where she touched many more lives. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Helen Bolduc, her only sister, Joyce Stauffer, her daughter Jean, and granddaughter Paige. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Richard "Dick" Hickner of Lake Jackson, and children Matthew and Janet Hickner of Bakersfield, California, Andrew and Duuna Hickner of Medina, Texas, Allan and Janet Robin Hickner of Lake Jackson, Edward and Lori Hickner of Angleton, Bridget and Forest Carroll of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and Kristen Hickner and husband Fred Damian of Pasadena, Texas. Doris had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her primary focus in life was to serve God, be a good wife and mother and raise her children. The family would like to thank friends, Help Inc, and A'Med Hospice for all of their help and prayers during this difficult time. There will be a visitation for friends and family on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Lakewood Funeral Chapel at 98 N. Dixie Dr in Clute between 6 and 8 p.m. The rosary will be recited at 7 pm. The funeral services will be held Friday, February 17, 2017 at St. Michael's Archangel Catholic Church at 100 Oak Dr South in Lake Jackson at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St Vincent DePaul Society or your favorite charity.
