Maxine Bagley Johnston died peacefully September 2, 2017, at Harbor Hospice in Houston, Texas. She was born March 13, 1920, in Denver, Colorado, to Lura Belle and Henry Dublin. She moved to Texas as a young girl, attended high school and graduated from Lon Morris College in Jacksonville. After marrying Manning Bagley, Maxine moved to Lake Jackson in 1952. She soon went to work for the City of Lake Jackson and retired as administrator of building permits and inspection after 29 years of joyful service. She loved her job and her city! When the City of Lake Jackson proclaimed Maxine Bagley Day and celebrated her retirement with an open house, she proclaimed "It is delightful they are doing this, but it's really embarrassing." Maxine loved her family, her church, playing bridge (at which she was a formidable competitor) and fashion. She was intelligent, funny, kind and generous. She was preceded in death by Manning Bagley, the father of her children; and in February by Dr. Victor Johnston, the love of her retirement years; as well as by her brother, Hensley Dublin. Survivors include her daughter, Judith Hightower; her son, John Bagley and wife, Michal; her grandson, Christopher Hightower and wife, Jamie; and daughters, Jordan and Madison Frederick; her stepdaughter, Carol Johnston and husband, Don Gordon and family; her stepson, Dr. Robert Johnston Jr. and wife, Jessica and family. Service will be held at Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2017 with visitation to follow. Burial will be in Rusk, Texas, on Saturday, September 9, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church, the Red Cross, or a charity of your choice.
