Kathleen "Katie" Olea Walker, 92, was called to Heaven on Wednesday, December 20, 2017. She passed away at her home in Clute with her four children gathered around her. Katie, born in Bruin, Pennsylvania on August 22, 1925, was one of ten children brought into the world by the late Hugh Clarence and Ruth Jane (Hanks) Knox. Katie's family moved to Graham, Texas when she was very young. She had a rich childhood, but as the oldest daughter, she carried a great deal of responsibility helping with her younger siblings. Although not a tall girl, Katie enjoyed playing basketball and tennis in high school. She met her husband Melvin Orvin Walker when a friend introduced them at the city library. On August 22, 1943, they married and began a family of their own. Melvin and Katie moved to Freeport after WWII where Melvin went to work for Dow while Katie, a loving and devoted mother, stayed home to watch over her four children, two boys and two girls. In 1963, when her youngest child started school, Katie went to work for the Brazosport Independent School District food service department. She worked her way up from vegetable helper to become the manager of the Freeport Intermediate School lunch room. After many years at FIS, she transferred to Clute Intermediate, where she remained until she retired in 1987. Holidays were her favorite time of year, a time when family and friends would gather at her home while she cooked and baked for them. She was an excellent cook, but excelled at baking and everyone had their favorite whether it be pie, cobbler, cupcakes, angel food cake, cinnamon rolls and ginger cookies. Katie was also a master seamstress and enjoyed making many of her daughters' clothes, including both of their wedding dresses. Later in life, one of Katie Walker's greatest joys was traveling back to Pennsylvania several times with her siblings, visiting family and friends. Another great joy was having the opportunity to travel to the Holy Land, to be baptized in the Jordan River. Katie's husband, Melvin, her parents and seven siblings have preceded her in death. Katie Walker is survived by her daughter Sandra (Ronald) Hutchins, son Allen (Blanca) Walker, son Louis (Lynn) Walker, and daughter Loorie (Jon) Bennett, her very special niece Jan Rinaca who was like a daughter to her; and nine grandchildren, Chuck (Debby) Hutchins, Wes Hutchins, Angela (Justin) Martin, Mark (Kristin) Walker, Jonathan (Allison) Walker, Joshua, Jared, Caleb and Ttrae Bennett. She is also survived by two brothers, H. C. (Fern) Knox and Jim (Betty) Knox. Services for Katie Walker will be Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, with visitation at 1:00pm and funeral at 2:00pm.

Sandy, Allen, Louis, & Loorie, I was saddened when Vicki checked the message from Loorie about Aunt Katie "Going Home!" We were on our way home to Mid TN from Dunlap. As I told Loorie in my response to her message, and told Vicki and Michaela, my memories of your Mom are very fond ones! She was so kind and gracious. I know she's smiling and laughing again, with that brand new body as she and Uncle Melvin are laughing and dancing once again. My only regret is that I didn't have more time to spend with her and all of you, and that I cannot be there with you tomorrow when you celebrate her life! I do know that my Momma and Daddy were there to welcome her along with with your Dad, as she walked through those gates to walk those "...streets paved like unto gold." You all will be in my prayers tomorrow and the days to come, as I ask for God's Comfort, Peace, and Love that only He can give. I love my "Texas Walker Family," each and every one of you! Mike, Vicki, Michaela, Christopher, & Elizabeth
