Boyd Kite Watson, III, age 74, of Lake Jackson passed away on March 5, 2018 in Houston, Texas. BK was born on May 29, 1943 in Monroe Louisiana to Boyd Kite Watson, Jr., and Orelle Tuggle Watson. He was their only child. BK's father, a Captain in the Navy, moved his family to Virginia shortly after BK's birth, where they remained until the end of the War. BK grew up in Tyler, Texas where his father, an attorney, worked in the oil and gas industry and his mother was a school teacher. BK graduated from Tyler's Robert E. Lee High School in 1961. According to BK, his parents dropped him off in College Station the day that Brazoria County was being hit by Hurricane Carla. He was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets and graduated from Texas A&M in 1965 with a Degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, BK entered the University of Texas School of Law and also joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve. After receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudent, he went active in the Coast Guard. Six months later he transitioned to the United States Navy, received a 2nd Lieutenants Commission and became a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps. In 1971, BK came to work for the City of Freeport where he served as the Assistant City Manager, Prosecuting Attorney, and Tax Assessor and Collector. After serving in these capacities for three years, he left the city, moved to Houston and joined a private law firm handling cases in real estate and banking. In 1977, he along with two other attorneys formed their own firm. BK eventually went out on his own and into private practice. During this time, he became actively involved with the USFL Houston Gamblers as Sports Agent and General Counsel. One of his more interesting stories about the Gamblers had to do with a trip to New York City to meet with the other team owners. The New Jersey Generals were being sold by their Oklahoma owner which required the other owners or their representatives to meet and vote to approve the sale of the team to the new owner Donald Trump. This was in 1983. BK continued in private practice until 1988 when he joined Standard Industrial Structures Corporation as General Counsel and Vice President where he remained until his retirement in 2015. While working in Freeport, BK met Jane Safford. They married on August 28, 1975. They have had a wonderful life together enjoying traveling in their recreational vehicles, spending time at Kemah on their various boats, and golfing. BK was an avid golfer. For many years he was a member of the Houston Golf Association and very involved with the Houston Open. In 1991, they purchase land in Waller County, built a log home, and for the next 20 years lived on a ranch in Pattison. In 2011, BK and Jane returned to Brazoria County settling in Lake Jackson. BK was proud of his military service and when his daughter Kim chose to enter the US Army he was very happy to show her how to get the perfect shine on her boots before she left for Korea. He was also proud of his grandson Drew knowing that he would soon attend NCO School to become a Sergeant before his deployment to Africa. In addition to his love of family, he loved Texas A&M. He was a member of the 12th Man Foundation, established an Academic Scholarship for golfers and was an Eppright Distinguished Donor. BK had a good life, a loving family, and will be missed by all. BK is preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Orelle Watson, and his mother-in-law and father- in-law, De and Mary Safford. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jane Watson, daughter Kim Marion, granddaughter Kirsten Marion, grandson, Drew Marion and wife, Ileana, and great-grandson, Sean Marion. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, De and Betty Safford, Brad and Gayla Baker, nephews, Blake Safford, Chris Baker, and Scot Baker and wife Trish. Great nieces Coryn and Rylee Baker. Honorary pallbearers will be Drew Marion, Brad Baker, Chris Baker, Scot Baker, Blake Safford, and Brandon Hein. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 from 12:30 to 1:30 with funeral services at 2:00 p.m. at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, Lake Jackson, Texas.
