It is with great sadness that the family of Phillip L. Ennis announces his passing after a brief illness with cancer on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the age of 67. Phillip was born in Port Sulphur, LA on May 15, 1951, but spent his childhood in Buras, LA where he lived with his family until they moved to Freeport, Texas when he was 13. Phillip attended Freeport Jr. High and Brazosport High School where he made many lifelong friends that he still had right up until his death. After graduation in May 1970, he attended Brazosport College for a couple of years and then went to work for Brazos M&E sweeping their floors. He worked his way up, and, some 20 years later, after doing all the jobs they offered along the way, he became Superintendent and Equipment Mgr. He was still working at the time of his death and enjoyed his job and the guys who worked for him immensely. He was an employee for 45 years. During the late '80's and early '90's, he coached Pee-Wee and Little League baseball and also was involved in The Freeport Jaycees with the Blessing of the Fleet and the Freeport Fishin' Fiesta. He was the chairman of both of those events the year he was President of the organization. Phillip married Gay Griffin after a 5 year courtship in 1975. Freeport is where they raised their two children, Aaron and Clay Ennis and enjoyed 43 years of marriage every single day. A couple of years ago, Phillip purchased property and a small cabin in Palestine, Texas, where they enjoyed fixing it up. Phillip built on an extra room to the cabin, almost completely by himself, and we were all so proud when he finished it. Phillip was a true gentleman as evidenced by his passion for golf. He made many friends playing every Sunday -- come rain, hail, sleet or snow -- at the Freeport Municipal Golf Course. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Gay and his children whom he loved more than anything in this world, Clay Ennis and his wife Sara and Aaron Ennis and his wife Melissa; his brother David Ennis and wife Karen and brother Allen Ennis and his wife, Darleen. His grandchildren who he was so proud of, Timothy, Wyatt, Kaitlyn, Cooper, Ellie and Laurel. Also numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to family, his close friends, Buster, Cathy, Matthew and Mark Lum, and Ken McGahee. The family also thanks hospice nurse Brandy Vandergrifft for her kindness and compassion. The celebration for Phillip's life will be held Friday, July 27, 2018 at 11 a.m. at First Untied Methodist Church in Freeport, Texas with Rev. Andy Dill officiating. A private burial will follow the reception. His favorite color was yellow, so if you'd like to wear something in that color in his honor, please do. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, Heart to Heart Hospice or The First United Methodist Church.

I first got to know Phil when he played football at Brazosport High School. He put forth 100% effort with passion and dedication and I quickly learned that was consistent in everything he undertook. I extend my deepest sympathies to Gay and the entire Ennis family.
