Joe Louis (JR) Sorrell, 87 went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, June 17, 2019 at home surrounded by his beloved children and grandchildren. Joe was born, July 1, 1931 in Payne Springs, Texas, the son of the late Joe Lewis and Argyle "Honey" Sorrell.

JR grew up in East Texas and moved to Freeport, TX in 1950 with his family. They purchased a boarding house on Ave A in Freeport. He went to work as an oiler on a dragline in the local plants and Port of Freeport where he completed his apprenticeship as an operator. He met and married the love of his life, Ivah Nell Feagins in 1952. Not long after the birth of their daughter Alice, they relocated to Washington State where he proudly served in the United States Army. Through the years he and his family worked to build an egg farm, where they also raised cattle and pigs in Oyster Creek, TX. Sorrell Eggs supplied eggs to many business and grocery stores. He later started a local construction company S&M Inc. JR was an inspiration, and a pacesetter. He encouraged and instilled an extreme work ethic in many of the young men and women whom worked with him.

JR was a cowboy. He took pride in his farm in Cayuga, TX which he and Ivah Nell farmed hay and raised cattle for decades. He loved raising cattle, riding as well as breeding horses and mules. He loved working cattle with all his Brazoria County Cowboys and friends as well as his family in East Texas. In his retirement JR rode trail rides across the country. He made many friends along the way and cherished each one of them. He was an inspiration to many and lived life to the fullest.

Jr was an avid hunter. He enjoyed hunting deer and elk with his family and friends in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. He loved being in the mountains. He often spoke of riding horses and hunting where he could see the beautiful places that God created for us.

JR is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ivah Nell Sorrell; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Lori Sorrell; daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Olan Parker; grandchildren, Zane Hawkins, Brookes and Clifford Vandergrifft, Lewis and Sophia Jones, Sunny Sorrell, Ian Jones and Andrea Park, Michael and Megan Sorrell, Pricilla and Alan Lamp, Monique Lawless; great-grandchildren, Alston Vandergrifft, Colton Vandergrifft, Zachary Hawkins, Jeannie Hawkins, Julie Vandergrifft, Landon Demaris, Jax Jones, Max Jones, and Lane Sorrell. JR is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Lynn Gillespie, of Brazoria, Texas, and sister Jan Campbell of Lake Jackson, Texas; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Jr was a member of the Brazoria First Assembly of God, Cayuga Assembly of God, Texas Cattleman's Association, Brazoria County Cattleman's Association, American Quarter Horse Association, and the American Paint Horse Association.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Jariene Smith.

Services will be held at Brazoria First Assembly of God on Saturday June 22, 2019. The visitation will be from noon until the beginning of his Celebration of Life Service at 1:00 pm.

So sorry for your loss! He was a good man with a dry sense of humor. He knew his Jesus and I'm sure is riding horses on the other side! God be with you Going through these trying days. Terry Douglas
