He will forever be remembered by his wife, Suzanne, children Taylor Smith (Cally), Hunter Smith (Abby), step-children Carli Branco (Miles), Jake Buckholz (Amy), Anna Stamps (Andrew), grandchildren Amelia Smith and Bleu Branco, parents Jerry and Nancee Smith, siblings Susan McDaniel (Mike, children Sarah & Patrick), Kasey Smith (Rebecca, daughter Kelsey), mother-in-law Peggy Yeaman, brothers-in-law Mike Yeaman (Lynne), Bob Yeaman (Cindi), sisters-in-law, Debbie Thomas (Pat), Kim Pilcher (Johnny), as well as many beloved cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a very large coaching family.
Kody lived life true to the following words:
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body. But rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW what a ride!"
Kody lived loud and loved deep. If you were ever looking for him, your best bets to find him would be the football field, the golf course, favorite fishing holes, pirating treasure in the Comal River, or playing washers on the beach.
The family would like to thank the incredible transplant team at UTMB Galveston, the coaching family, the BISD family, friends, and the community for all the care, love, and support showered on us during these past few months.
Until we meet again, Coach…anchors aweigh. Safe voyage.
A Celebration of Life will be held June 20, 2021 at Stahlman Park Event Center in Surfside Beach. The celebration will be come and go from 11:00-3:00. It will be an informal, indoor/outdoor celebration with washer boards on the beach and lots of good memories to be shared. Stahlman Park is located at 2211 Bluewater Highway, Surfside Beach TX 77541.
A private memorial will be held with family at another time.

JD, Aunt Nancy, Susan Kasey, Susie and all the Smith Family,
Love you with all my heart and I love my cousin Kody with all my heart and will miss him dearly. But I believe in my heart Kody would rather us laugh and have a good time remembering HIS ANTICS rather than us grieving and with that I will say Job Well Done.
You made an impact on so many lives not only in our family but in countless kids and their families. Your impact will be remembered for many the rest of our life.
I wasn't prepared to be writing this at this time needed others to know you were one of my favorites like a little brother that I loved so much. Just wished I could have done one of those back flips.
After thinking awhile about what would best describe Kody, besides being larger than life, it would be the speech from Friday Night Lights about being perfect. Here is some of that speech.
Well I want you to understand something. To me, being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship to yourself and your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn't let them down, because you told them the truth. And that truth is that you did everything that you could. There wasn't one more thing that you could have done.
Can you live in that moment, as best you can, with clear eyes and love in your heart? With joy in your heart? If you can do that gentlemen, then you're perfect.
Kody Rest in Peace Brother and I will see you again.

As has been the case of any of my players passing from this earth I become highly disturbed intially and extremely saddened . I personally recruited Kody into becoming a Houston Cougar and like all of his teammates , I was so proud of his every day watching him closely and coaching him into becoming improved and being the very best he could be with God's gifts that was delivered to him . He always made the most of what he had and for that I know that this was his gift back to God . As for now I know that I will miss him terribly , but I know that by his crossing over to the shores of Eternity I can simply say that I will see you later , my little man . Just promise me that you will do one of your great back flips for me when I arrive to rejoin you , God , Jesus and all others . Kody was a friend, teammate at the University of Houston, and a brother. We will miss his larger than life energy, infectious smile, and joy of life. We are proud of the impact that Kody has had on his community, numerous student-athletes, but honestly would have expected nothing less. After all he was a Run-n-Shoot boy and this is the impact that our coaches had and prepared us to do. In 1990 Kody back flipped in the end zone after scoring his lone career touchdown in the Coca Cola Bowl in Tokyo, but on June 2 when he went home all the saints in Heavem were back flipping with him in celebration. #Coogs4Life #TheBrotherhood
