Gary Alvin Rodgers

of Goliad, TX

April 11, 1957 - April 3, 2022

  • Obituary
  • Guestbook
Gary Alvin Rodgers, 64, a long-time resident of Lake Jackson, left this world and began his journey home on April 3rd, 2022 after a long fight with a glioblastoma brain tumor. He lost his life in the battle with glioblastoma, but ultimately gained the victory that was won in Christ.

Gary was born on April 11th, 1957 in Port Acres, Texas, the second of four children born to Minister James A. and Bettye Rodgers. The family moved throughout Texas as James served at many Church of Christ congregations. Gary called many cities in Texas home throughout his life, including Freeport, Lake Jackson, Cleburne, San Antonio, West Columbia, Del Rio, McAllen, and Goliad. Gary graduated from Del Rio High School in 1975 and went on to attend Sam Houston State University. In 1979 he married the love of his life, Alice West.

Gary was a man of great faith. He was a life-long active member of the Church of Christ. He will be remembered by many as a renaissance man. He was a powerful athlete, multi-talented musician, successful salesman and business owner, gifted speaker and storyteller, and avid outdoorsman. He played second base on softball teams that made it to the state championships. He played thousands of rounds of golf at Columbia Lakes and qualified to play in the Texas State Amateur Championship where Alice served as his caddie. He even beat professional golfer Fred Couples once! Gary was a member of the Common Chord a capella gospel quartet and sang at church and various functions around Lake Jackson. He played the trombone and the euphonium in the community band and Brazosport Symphony, and served as the President of the Symphony in the late 2010s. Gary worked many jobs in his life, from ranch hand, to mailman, to salesman, and worked for many years at Brazoria Valve and Fitting Co. before starting his own business, Rodgers and Associates. He served on the board of the International Society of Automation for many years. He was active in working with and supporting local youth through the Boys and Girls Club of Brazoria County. Gary loved to talk and made friends everywhere he went. His gift of gab led him to emcee events and parties, and even to become a wedding officiant. Gary was always happy to be outdoors, whether he was fishing, deer or dove hunting, or even just working on his ranch in Goliad. He lived by the phrase, "the more you do, the more you can do," and he took great pride in a hard day's work. Gary was such a selfless soul up to the day of his passing as he made sure his family had accepted that he was leaving on his next journey, knowing he was at peace and not afraid. His energy of positivity, kindness, and love will be missed until we meet again in the presence of our Lord.

Gary is preceded in death by his father, James A. Rodgers and his grandparents. He is survived by his wife, Alice West Rodgers, his daughter Leslie and her husband Andrew Myers, his grandson, Mason Myers, his mother, Bettye Rodgers, his siblings James Rodgers (Brenda), Cathy Majors (Gary), and Bryan Rodgers, and many nieces and nephews.

Gary's life will be celebrated at Lakewood Funeral Home on April 11th at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Gary Rodgers Glioblastoma Research Memorial Fund at https://giving.uth.edu/memorial

Very sad to hear about Gary's passing. So many good times shared with the Rodgers boys way back when we were kids and later as young adults. I can only imagine hearing what Bubba is telling everyone up in God's Heaven, and hearing the laughter he is creating. Many prayers to Alice and Leslie and all of the Rodgers family!

Alice, James, and The Rodgers extended Family. Was so sorry to hear of Gary's passing. I have not seen him in quite some time, but I knew him from when he worked at Brazoria Valve years ago. I was one of his customers and would meet with him often to order supplies. I remember him as a very kind hearted and personable person. I also worked with his brother, James, at Dow. My thoughts and prayers are with the Family at this difficult time. He will be missed by all who knew him and his family. RIP Gary and God Bless!

"Uncle" Gary was a special soul. He truly was a Renaissance man and was a stranger to no one. Though I only had a chance to work with him for a short period of time, he took me under his wing and treated me like family. He was kind, caring, hilarious, and somehow always knew the right thing to say. His presence alone always somehow seemed to make the room brighter. "El Guapo" will truly be missed, but the impacts from his contagious personality and tremendous heart will long continue to spread positivity in this world.

Gary touched many people just by being Gary. We were fortunate to have he and Alice as our neighbor. Gary was a humble servant. Heaven is all the better with him in it.

Dear Alice and Rodgers Family,
So sad to hear of Gary's passing. I've been out of touch since retiring June 2018 and was unaware of Gary's battle with cancer. I've known Gary for many years as we were competitors and also served many positions for our local ISA Section. I've never known a better man than Gary, always doing his utmost to serve others, honest, kind and if Gary made a commitment, you could etch it in stone. As one of many that will miss Gary, we offer our prayers for comfort and condolence during this difficult time. The Baird Family.

It was such a pleasure to perform with Gary in the Brazosport Community Band! If we were ever in the same room, Gary would be certain to find me and give me a hug. What a fine musician, as well as all of his other accolades and accomplishments! I know he was very proud to be married to one of my first cousins, Alice, whom we wish to express our condolences for her loss. Gary was such a great guy, and he will be missed in this community by so many people!

Gary was such a great person to work with. He always managed to make us laugh with his witty humor. I had the privilege of working with him at the Clute Post Office way back in the 80's. He once told me if he had known that a baby could give so much love that he and Alice would have had one sooner. I haven't seen him since he left the PO but I will always remember that statement about his baby girl. I pray for your comfort in knowing that he was a Godly man.

Alice & Leslie, Richard & I will cherish all the years the guys played softball together on the Chargers traveling, laughing & just making wonderful memories. Leslie was too young to remember but she loved Richards blue truck. She always wanted to ride in it & Bubba would just laugh. We called Gary Bubba back in the day. He called Richard "Penneyhead" & always had nicknames, I was Lisa Belle. Richard enjoyed their fishing trips, dove hunting and oh the stories, they shared, we all shared. What a blessing he was in our lives, thank you for sharing him with us. May God comfort you all, just knowing Gary is in His presence. Our condolences.

Praying for your family at this difficult time for you. Gary on the other hand probably has all of heaven laughing and enjoying catching up with his Dad. Gary will be missed by the employees of First National Bank, he always made us laugh when he came.
