Robert (Bob) Allen Hunter, also known as "Superman" by those who loved and cared for him, won his battle with Parkinson's Disease by gaining eternal life on September 5, 2022.

Bob was born on April 7, 1949 to Edward Hunter and Dorothy Saeger Hunter. After graduating Brazosport High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Bob served on the USS Lapon, a Sturgeon-class attack submarine, during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1975 and went on to receive his diploma from The University of South Carolina in 1977. Bob began a career in the nuclear industry working at various nuclear energy plants throughout the country. He married the love of his life, Marlene Madere, on May 21, 1999 and they settled in Lake Jackson, Texas to raise Sean Matherne together. He retired in 2017 from his title as the Nuclear Group Manager at Hurst Technologies located in Angleton, Texas.

Bob was a kind and loving partner to his spouse Marlene, as well as an amazing father to his son, Sean. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf, volunteering to serve the community, walking dogs for the SPCA of Brazoria County, playing pranks on his patient wife, and cheering for the opposition of his son's sports teams. As he would affectionately tease, "Turn out the lights, the party's over, they say that all good things must end. Call it a night the party's over and tomorrow starts everything all over again."

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Hunter and Dorothy Saeger Hunter, his brother, Edward (Steve) Hunter, and his devoted four-legged companion, Elmeaux. He is survived by his wife, Marlene Madere Hunter, bonus son, Sean Matherne and wife Kristina Grauke Matherne, step-moms, Hettye Hunter and Iona Hunter, sisters, Judy Hunter, Martha Hunter and Leah Hunter Barnes and husband Richard Barnes, and sister-in-law, Cheryl Hunter.

There will be a small celebration of life for immediate family members only. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the SPCA of Brazoria County. A burial service at the Houston National Cemetery will take place at a later date.

His family will always remember the unwavering care and support of the staff and employees at Country Village Care. Thank you for your devotion and kindness over these last years. "It's not how much you do, but how much love you put in the doing." Mother Teresa

Bob was a friend and shipmate from those days when the cold war was fought from 600 feet down.
We were shipmates and the USS Lapon.
Bob was quick and sharp, an exceptional athlete and a competent ET/RO.
Cards or Sports Bob was a competitor.
A quick and sometimes scathing wit, Bob did not suffer fools easily.
I saw him at the last Lapon Reunion he attended.
There is a bond shared by those who toil hard and suffer long together in service to their country.
A fast attack nuclear submarine is such a place.
Bob was a big part of my experience in serving aboard the Lapon, especially during the Yum Kippur War and during special ops chasing Russian missile boats.
ORSE boards or emergencies while underway, Bob was the man we wanted on the boards.
Rest In Peace Bob.

I was able to develop a terrific friendship with Bob during our time on and off the submarine. Not only did we stand watches along side one another but we also played basketball, softball, and golf together. During boring shutdown watches in port in the middle of the night, we would entertain ourselves by occasionally playing hangman against each other. Although that occurred nearly 50 years ago, I still remember that he finally stumped me on the word "zloty". Of course I was never able to return the favor as Bob was always able to guess my words. May he rest in peace on Eternal Patrol. With heartfelt sympathy to you Marlene and all of Bob's family.

I am certain Bob's Heavenly reward will be great; he loved Marlene and Sean like no other they'd known before. He became etched in their hearts forever. I am grateful to God for bringing Marlene and Bob together. Their love and faithfulness was a model for all who knew them. May Bob rest in peace, and may Marlene and Sean's memories assuage the pain of their loss and be balm to their aching hearts. Love you, Marlene; wish I could be with you.

I am so joyful for Bob, that he is finally at peace and his body is whole again, but my heart is breaking for all of his family and friends.

Marlene, you were an amazing wife and caretaker, who was loyal and devoted until the very end. Your strength was inspirational, and your faith in God never wavered. I pray that God will continue to give you the strength you will need in the difficult days that lie ahead. Love you, and will be praying for all of you!!❤️🙏
