Roy Lynn Lewis, 80, of Richwood, Texas passed away peacefully at his home on 04/28/2024.

Roy was born on November 12, 1943, to Coe and Ruby Lewis in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. After Roy graduated Valedictorian from Pine Tree High School in 1961, he went on to Kilgore College. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin University graduating as Valedictorian of his class. He later obtained his master's degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

While obtaining his bachelor's degree at Stephen F. Austin, Roy was appointed as a summer missionary working with the Baptist Student Union in the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky.

While obtaining his master's degree at Sam Houston State, he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Lowery. They were married on December 21, 1968. Shortly after marrying, Roy and Barbara moved down to the Brazosport area in 1969 when Roy accepted a job teaching English at Brazosport College, kickstarting a 47-year career.

Barbara and Roy were members of the First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson.

Roy and Barbara went on to have three children, Brandy Katherine (1974), Holly Elizabeth (1977), and Lynsay Margaret (1981).

Roy retired from Brazosport College in 2015 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. Prior to the hemorrhage, Roy was very active in intramural sports and the Baptist Student Union at the college, having taken several teams to the Baptist Student Union state softball tournament (and winning the title several times). Roy was the first sponsor of the newly formed Baptist Student Union on the Brazosport College campus.

Roy was very active in the Lion's Club; he was a member of the Richwood Lion's club which eventually became the Brazosport Evening Lion's club for over 50 years. He was also very active in the Masonic Lodge. He became a mason in 1998 after his daughters had been in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls for many years. Roy worked hard and it wasn't long before he became a 33rd degree mason. Roy served as the Worshipful Master of Lake Jackson Lodge twice and he was very involved in the Scottish Rite Masonic body in Galveston.

Roy loved the Texas Longhorns, the San Francisco Giants, and the New York Giants. Roy loved playing and watching all sports, especially softball and basketball. He was a long-time pitcher for a variety of slow-pitched softball teams (county leagues, church leagues, senior leagues, and other competitive teams). He looked forward to playing in an annual cardiac survivor's softball game every spring.

Roy was an avid hunter, having had deer leases all over the state of Texas for most of his adult life. He would take immense pride in preparing for deer season- fixing up his deer stands, putting out deer feed, etc.

Roy never met an animal that he did not love, nursing a number of wounded animals back to health in his home throughout the years. On one occasion, he had his wife stop traffic in the middle of Old Angleton Road in the dark of night so that he could help a raccoon cross the road. You could often find him in the company of a succession of his favorite dogs. His youngest daughter has inherited this gene.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Coe and Ruby Lewis as well as his brother, Tony Lewis. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara, his daughters Brandy Barrett, Holly Henry (Stephen), and Lynsay Lewis, and his granddaughters McKenzie Smith, Hannah Henry, and Hadley Henry.

The family will welcome friends and family for a visitation at Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson, Texas on Saturday, May 4, 2024, from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm.

What a great guy and great teacher! Not many people directly impact your success in life but he, along with Bill Shaw, certainly impacted mine. As many know, It is almost impossible to get a college degree without being able to write college level papers about various subjects. The best thing that ever happened to me was being instructed by Roy and Bill how to write research papers at a high level. Without this ability my masters degree would never have happened! Thank you Roy......till we meet again.

I was privileged to meet Roy and Barbara in 1972 when I
Started teaching Physical Education, coaching tennis and volleyball
and starting the Intramural program in 1972. He was an avid supporter and participant in many sports , basketball, volleyball, softball,
Table tennis, and badminton. I remember beating him in a hot match in badminton and he told me I should enter the Olympics. I enjoyed playing in a summer coed slow pitch tournament with my then tennis partner Butch AMC Murray who hit two homeruns , one on his off side then at the opponents request one on his on side. Needless to say Roy put together very strong teams and they usually won. Roy was a leader in more than sports and BSU but also in life. He will be greatly missed but we know there are sports teams in Heaven , if not he is organizing and playing in them now. Lead on good friend.

Roy was a great influence to so many of the students at Brazosport College. He was our BSU director and English professor. That was 50 years ago and he still has an impact on my ministry. He and Barbara were deeply loved

Roy was a joy leading the Baptist Student Union back in 1973-74 as Brazosport College - I was glad to know him and really appreciated his leadership in steering our BSU members into effective ministry and fellowship. He was a good friend to have at college.

I first met Roy while playing church softball. Later, our paths crossed again when the Gulf Coast Bapt Association hired me to lead the Baptist Student Union at Brazosport College. What I did not realize, at first, was that Roy Lewis had been leading BSU, along with John Cooper, as volunteers, for many years. We three worked well together, taking trips with students and carrying out projects. But Roy was the real leader and I learned a lot from him! He loved the Lord, and he loved his students. He will be missed!

Mr. Lewis had a tremendous impact on my life. I attended Brazosport College from the fall of '77 through the spring of '79. He was not only my English professor for both semesters of my second year, he supported the Baptist Student Union, of which I was Vice President the first year and President the second. I enjoyed our many conversations about softball and his interests. He was a great encourager to me. While my heart is full of sadness at his passing, it is also filled with gratitude that God placed him in my life for a season. If heaven doesn't have a softball league, it will soon.

I did not know Mr. Lewis that well but he was my neighbor. We talked over the years, and he was a very interesting man and was always in a good mood. He knew a little about everything. Every time I leave my house, I look at the porch thinking I will see him there, but he is not. I am going to miss him sitting there. I am very sorry for your loss. If there is anything I can do just let me know, I am right next door.

Thank you daddy for everything that you did for all of us over the years. Thank you for leading our family well. Thank you for reading Bible stories to us each and every night before bed while growing up (even if we didn't always pay attention) and for taking us to church every Sunday.

Thank you for supporting us at all of our various school events whether it be games, concerts, or ceremonies. Thank you for coming to eat lunch with us in elementary school (even if they wouldn't let us talk).

Thank you for being the best grampi (aka ''grumpy'' as you often referred to yourself) to McKenzie, Hannah, and Hadley. You loved spending time with them and they loved spending time with you too.

Thank you for loving us all. You were so very proud of all of us and you would tell us how very proud you were often. We were proud to call you ours too.

We will miss you more than words can express, but I have the assurance that I will see you again one day in Heaven and what a glorious day that will be!

I love you daddy. Forever and ever.
