Virginia Pauline Strength was born in Huntington, West Virginia on December 28, 1929 to Lillian Strength. She grew up in the household of her widowed Grandma Strength as well as her Aunt Elsie France and her cousin Stanley France who she looked up to like a brother. When she was about eight years old her mother married Owen Wallace who was an Iron Worker. That began years of moving from state as Owen followed the construction work which meant Virginia changed schools at least once a year. She successfully completed high school in Huntington, West Virginia with straight As while working at Borden Milk Company 40 hours a week. It was during this time that she met Bill Penvose who was working for Borden's as a milk man. They fell in love and they got married at the Methodist Church in Huntington on January 17, 1948. In March 1949 they became parents when their son John was born. In 1951 they moved to Texas and Bill went to work for Dow Chemical and their son Danny was born in April 1951.
Bill and Virginia settled in Freeport and Virginia began working as a bookkeeper in the construction industry. In August 1958 their youngest son David was born. Bill and Virginia joined the First Methodist Church in Freeport in 1955 where Virginia was active in the choir and sang many solos over the decades. Bill was a fantastic cook who cooked for their family and became famous for cooking for huge crowds including Methodist Men.
Virginia is preceded in death by her grandmother, mother, Aunt Elsie, cousin Stanley, husband of 54 years, Bill, her sons Danny and David.
She is survived by her son John Penvose and his wife Sandra of Tampa, Florida, grandsons, Eric and Stephen Penvose of Tampa, Florida, granddaughter Susan Charping of Georgia. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Andrew and Regan Penvose and Leighton and Kinley Charping.
Funeral Services will be at First Methodist Church in Freeport on Saturday, August 10th at 2 pm with visitation an hour before the service.
