Funeral services for David Gene Gruener, age 87, of Jones Creek, Texas will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at the Lakewood Funeral Chapel at 98 N Dixie Dr, Lake Jackson Tx. The family will receive friends at noon at the Lakewood chapel on Saturday immediately preceding the service. Interment will be private at the Gulf Prairie Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

David (lovingly known as ''Tata'') was born in Bellville, Tx on May 23, 1937. His mother Mary Belle and father Bennie moved to Jones Creek when David was still very young as Bennie went to work for the Dow Chemical Company in the early 1940's. David graduated from Brazosport High School in 1955 and spent the rest of his life as a resident of Jones Creek. Shortly after graduation he too went to work for the Dow Chemical Company. He retired from Dow after nearly 40 years and was able to enjoy a long retirement - hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

David met his wife Florene Schroeder, (and known by most as Flo and affectionately as ''Nana'') in Peters, Texas where he would spend time at his grandparent's home and cotton gin that was conveniently just down the street from where Flo's family lived. Evidently Flo's family encouraged her to run out in the front yard when David was driving by and her father Charlie Schroeder even had her drive the tractor with a load of cotton to the cotton gin (twice!) when they knew David was there working for his grandfather Max Schubert. It was a successful union as they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on October 10th, 2024.

Survivors include his wife Florene, son David Charles (Chuck) Gruener and wife Christine, daughter Vicki Marie Sweat and husband Johnny Ray, and brother Claude Michael Gruener, as well as his beloved grandchildren Cody Sweat and wife Kelly, Tyler Sweat and wife Chelsy, Mason Gruener and wife Olivia, and his granddaughter Emily Gruener. His cherished great-grandchildren Kade, Kyler, Karter, Kinley, Wyatt, Kasen, Hayden, and Hunter Sweat brought him immense joy. He is preceded in death by his mother Mary Bell Yeamans, father Benjamin Charles Gruener, and stepfather Lloyd M. Yeamans. He also leaves nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends who will miss him.

Pallbearers honoring David's memory are two of his grandsons Mason Gruener and Tyler Sweat.

David was a beloved grandfather and great-grandfather spending much of his retired years enjoying the outdoors with his family - hunting, fishing, riding the 4 wheelers at their deer ranch and attending many, many youth sporting events - soccer, lacrosse, football and especially baseball. He found joy in life's simple pleasures and treasured every moment spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether relaxing and watching his deer ''Buck'' and ''Bucky'' at his ranch in South Texas, fishing in the surf, whittling wood (especially the push toy ducks and penguins made for each grandchild!), enjoying a good meal, tinkering in his ''gun room'', indulging in an ice-cold RC Cola, or ice cream. He also enjoyed sharing a strong hug and a kiss on the cheek. Tata's love was always genuine and heartfelt

David and Flo in recent years thoroughly enjoyed attending the Coastal Plains Cowboy Church.

David's was a life well-lived with a deep devotion to family. He will forever be remembered as a loving, caring and hardworking man and his love of the outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, and simply enjoying nature will live on through the generations he inspired. David's warmth, dedication, and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.`

Dear Flo, Vicki, Johnny and family. We are truly sorry for your loss. We always loved seeing your dad at church and the sweet hugs your mom and dad gave with that strong hand shake he had. When Mary Jane and I went to see he and Flo I loved the family stories they both told. We are sad for your loss but know God had something else planned for David to do with Him. We are praying for you all.
