Marguerite Fassler Davidson, who had been a Lake Road resident for almost fifty years, passed away on December 24 after a long illness .
Marguerite Davidson was born in Hudson, Colorado, in 1909, and graduated from Golden (Colorado) High School. After receiving her baccalaureate degree, with majors in Spanish and English, from Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, she taught in one-room schools for four years, two of which were spent in Mexico under the auspices of American Metals, Inc. In 1932 she accepted a teaching position in Aruba at the school for the refining community of Standard Oil Company. In 1936, she married George (Jock) Davidson who, at that time, was the manager of Standard Oil's Arend refinery at Oranjestad.
In 1937, the Davidsons left the Netherlands West Indies to follow Mr. Davidson's career with Royal Dutch Shell and hers as an educator in Illinois, Great Britain, New York and Canada. Upon his retirement as Vice President of Shell Canada, the Davidsons spent a year in Dakka, Pakistan, where Mr. Davidson established a training program for the management school of the United Nations International Labor Organization. Subsequently, the Davidsons retired to Lake Jackson, where they continued their avid interest in and generous support of the arts and sciences.
With her husband, Marguerite was a founding member of the Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences and continued a deep interest throughout her lifetime in the two theatres, art gallery and the planetarium there. They were an integral part of establishing the Center's Museum of Natural Sciences. She was also a founding board member of the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra and the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra League. She was named Board Member Emerita in 1998 for her decades of unfailing support of the Symphony.
With a life-long passion for promoting and supporting education, Marguerite contributed to perpetual legacies for scholarship and educational resources at Brazosport College, Western State College, and Rice University. Her generosity also made possible the dramatic sculpture, "The Spirit of Music" in the lobby of The Clarion at Brazosport College, which was unveiled in 2005.
Marguerite leaves behind her two devoted caregivers during the last four years, Christiana Patterson and Angela Wright; her gracious friends and neighbors, Don and Daren Wasek; in addition to numerous friends in the community, those in her bi-monthly Current Concerns group, and at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, where she was a stalwart member of the choir for more than forty years.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 200 Oyster Creek Drive, Lake Jackson, on Saturday, January 7, at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of any flowers, contributions to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, in Marguerite's memory, are encouraged.
