Tom was born on January 23, 1937 in Caldwell, Texas and grew up in Oyster Creek. He went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Hermann Hospital in Houston.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved being in the outdoors.
Tom was active in the Masonic Lodge where he reached the level of Master Mason. He was a Past Master of Velasco Lodge No. 757 A.F. and A.M. and was recently honored with the Golden Trowel Award, the highest award one can receive in the Masonic Lodge. Tom worked as an operator for Dow Chemical where he retired in 1995.
Following retirement, he worked part-time as an insurance writer for Germania Farm Mutual Insurance. Tom was also involved in woodcarving and fly tying.
He was an active member of the Sea Center Fly Fishers and Brazoria County Woodcarvers Club. He also taught fly tying and woodcarving to local youth.
Tom graduated from Freeport High School in 1955. He served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959 as a member of the 3rd Armored Division. During his service, he was stationed at Fort Knox and in Germany. On April 2, 1960, Tom married Vivian, his wife of 51 years. They had three children and seven grandchildren. He was a member of Oyster Creek Baptist Church.
Tom never met a stranger and spent his life serving others and helping those in need. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Ruth Quarles, and brother, Jack Quarles.
Survivors include wife, Vivian Patterson Quarles; children, Tim Quarles and wife, Patty, of Seabrook, Breck Quarles and wife, Sheryl, of Palestine, and Linda Quarles Goff and husband, Larry, of Angleton; grandsons, Zachary, William and J.C. and granddaughters, Rebekah, Mollie Claire, Cameron, and Casey; and sister, Lela Jane Quarles, of LaPorte.

Daear Vivian & family,- I wanted to let you know what a joy it always was to be around Tom--he always had a smile & something funny to say--I will always smile when I think of him. We've all been friends for many yrs & watched our children grow up together & we had such fun through the years. Tom will be truly missed but I'm glad he's not suffering & in a much better place. I wanted to let you know that Tom is a one of a kind friend. He has always been kind to Candy and I and we will miss him dearly. Tom took the time to show me a little about fly fishing and carving. He really did like carving walking sticks and he waa a master at it. May God be with you and your family.
