Norma Jean Cherry, 89, of Lake Jackson passed away Thursday, May 24, 2012 after a brief illness. She was born September 20, 1922 in Fort Towson, Oklahoma to Guy and Arlie Holcomb Holman. She spent her childhood years in Plainview and Huntsville, Texas. She graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1943. She taught elementary school in Freeport during the war years where she met and married her husband Jack Cherry. They were married over fifty years until his death in 1998.


She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her brother Guy Holman, Jr.


Jean is survived by 3 sons: Bobby Cherry and wife Vanessa of Lake Jackson,


Mike Cherry and wife Veronica of Angleton,


Alan Cherry of Lake Jackson,


5 grandchildren: Beth Schaefermann (Marco) of Detmold, Germany,


Travis Cherry (Jonda) of Friendswood, Texas,


Staff Sergeant Joey Cherry, USAF (Loni) of Surprise, Arizona,


Bonnie Keesler (Marcus) of Richwood, Texas,


Jessalyn Cherry (Jeff) of Lake Jackson, Texas,


4 great grandchildren: Carissa, Parker, Caden, and Everett,


2 cousins: Carol Mc Crory Lane of Kennebunkport, Maine,


Ernest Reed Holcomb of Dallas, Texas,


3 nieces: Myra Lewis (Ray) of Avinger, Texas,


Kay Lewis of La Vernia, Texas,


Robin Yarborough of Conroe, Texas, and


1 nephew Chan Cherry (Jennifer) of Houston, Texas.


The family will receive friends 7pm until 9pm Saturday at Lakewood Chapel. Funeral services will be 3:30pm Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Lakewood Funeral Chapel with Rev. Craig Baird officiating. Pall bearers will be: Marcus Keesler, Jeff Erwin, David Wood, Joey Cherry, Travis Cherry, and Chan Cherry.


The family requests in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.


Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker and will be greatly missed.
