C.C. "Bertie" Burton passed away at his residence, Carriage Inn, in Lake Jackson, Texas on August 27, 2012. He was a few days away from his 92nd birthday. He was Brazoria County Resident for 70 years.

"Bertie" was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 14, 1920 to Cuthbert E. Burton and Mary Wagner Burton. He grew up in San Antonio, Texas where he graduated from Harlandale High School and then earned a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M.

In 1942, he went to work for the Dow Magnesium Corporation in Freeport. In 1944 "Bertie" took a leave of absence from Dow to join the U.S. Navy, received training at the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned as an ensign and proudly served aboard the USS Rogers in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Following his active duty he served in the Naval Reserve until 1952.

Upon completion of his active duty service, he resumed his career at Dow and retired in 1984. He met his future wife V. Lou Sansom at Mrs. Warren's boarding house in Freeport. They soon married.

"Bertie" was a devoted member of the congregation of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Freeport. He was elected Senior Warden numerous times, served many years on the Vestry and as Church Treasurer.

"Bertie" and Lou traveled widely throughout the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. They especially enjoyed their two year stint in Amsterdam where "Bertie" was on an assignment for Dow.

"Bertie" was an avid reader and enjoyed early morning golf with his golfing buddies. He tried his hand at raising cattle, loved to fish and was an outdoorsman of the first order.
He was a quiet, kind, good hearted man that treated all people with dignity and respect. He just recently joined the volunteer staff at Brazosport Hospital. This was a duty he approached with great enthusiasm.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lou, his parents and brother, Glenn Burton.

He is survived by his brother, Gene Burton of Ames, Iowa as well as nephews, nieces and many dear friends.

Visitation with family and friends will be 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service of Christian Burial at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, located at 1307 W. 5th Street in Freeport, on Monday, September 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. The Reverend Robert C. Dohle will officiate. A burial service and interment with military honors will be at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Calvin Warren, Lewis Kitchen, Ralph David, Saline Zabana, Mark Goebel and Steve Sansom.

The family requests donations in honor of "Bertie" be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.

I am sorry to read of your loss. Many have lost loved ones and want to see them again. The Bible actually says what will be death's unavoidable eventuality at Revelation 21:4, which says, "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." Death will be gone forever. May this be of encouragement to the family of C. Burton.

Mr. Burton will certainly be missed. We really enjoyed working with Mr. Burton so much, when we did his estate sale, and I loved visiting with him at the Carriage Inn. Such a gracious and interesting man. Shari Boykin and the Estate Liquidators staff
