Betty Jean Woodiel Tanner, 84, died April 8, 2013 with her family by her side at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Betty was born in Freeport, Texas in 1929. During her adolescent and teenage years she played many sports, spent time at Quintana Beach, and experienced hurricanes, their devastation and the restoration of the Gulf Coast. She graduated from Freeport High School in 1947, most athletic of her graduating class. She then went on to play semi-professional baseball on an all women's team.

Shortly after she met and quickly fell in love with your soul mate Bobby Tanner. They wed in 1947 and were married for 49 years until his sudden passing in 1996. Together they had two children Bobbie Jean Tanner Owens and Richard Warren "Dicky" Tanner. Her and Bobby's lives were not only adventurous but also prosperous. Together they enjoyed offshore fishing, flying, hunting, teaching Sunday school, building multiple successful businesses, local politics and raising a loving family. In addition she was an instrument-rated pilot. Betty was unique for her time and may we all hope to have such a wonderful, special and fulfilling life. She was beloved and will be missed by all.

Betty is survived by: her daughter Bobbie Jean, her grandchildren Sunnye Owens-Garrett and Andrew Owens, her grandson in-law Brian Garrett and finally her great-grandson Grayson Garrett.

The family invites all of Betty's friends to come and celebrate her life with them at 4:00 p.m. on April 10th at the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Jackson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Brazosport College to the Tanner Scholarship.

Sunnye and Brian....Oh how you were blessed with a Fun and Spirited Gran Gran! I certainly know where Sunnye got her Spunk from, no doubt! Ziplining in Costa Rica her 80's, trips to Hawaii and who knows where else! Walking in all the Stride for Stroke events....she certainly LIVED her life, didn't she!? How wonderful for yall to have had her and loved her all these years and through yall's love her life was blessed even more and she kept on enjoying the ride till the end! I know how special she was to you, Sunnye and of course to your Mom and Andrew....you will carry many, many fun and sweet memories for the rest of your lives and will certainly have lots of stories to tell Grayson, through laughter and smiles! She is home now, with the love of her life and is at peace! Love you, Sunnye, Brian and Gray!
