Evelyn Gene Collins, 90, of Lake Jackson, Texas went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on October 13, 2014. She was born on February 25, 1924 in Goliad, Texas to the late Harrel Joel Heard and Zuelah Rebecca Heard.
At a young age her family relocated to Freeport, Texas. Soon after her graduation from Freeport High School in 1941 she met and married her loving husband Cecil David Collins. Sergeant Collins had just returned home from an 18 month stay in the Aleutian Islands with the Coast Artillery. After living a short time in El Paso, Texas they settled in Freeport where they raised their two children, David Harold and Barbara Gene.
Throughout her life Evelyn Gene held several jobs beginning in high school with the Freeport Pharmacy and, after graduation, with Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator. During WWII she lived in Seattle, Washington and was employed by Boeing Airplane Company as a riveter. After her husband opened Collins Electric, which is still run by her son and grandson, she kept books for the company and created a happy, loving home for their children. She was also a dedicated caregiver to many family members.
Evelyn Gene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Doris Faye Little. She is survived by her son, David and wife Vickie; daughter Barbie Rhodes; grandchildren, Mona Rhodes, Gena Rhodes, and Heath Collins and wife Shelley; great grandchildren, Hadley and Cortland Collins; and lifelong best friend, Margaret Girouard.
Some of Evelyn Gene's fondest memories were spending summers at the family ranch in Goliad with her sister, cousin, and best friends.
The family will receive friends 6pm 8pm Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Lakewood Chapel. Graveside services will be 2pm Friday, October 17, 2014 at Glendale Cemetery in Goliad, Texas.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the charity of your choice.

The Last Moment
Then comes the moment of saying good bye.
Now it's the end, you stop asking, ''Why''?
You search your mind for things never said.
Strength comes from friends and tears that you shed.
What now has to be, you know's for the best.
It's hard to let go, but now she can rest.
Hold to the moments that all of you shared.
The Lord now is waiting, with a place He's prepared.
