Margaret Elizabeth Girouard

Margaret Elizabeth Spitzer Girouard, 93 years young, died peaceably at her home in Freeport, TX on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 surrounded by her family. Margaret was born on February 11, 1923 in West Columbia, TX to Louisa and Joseph Spitzer. After living in West Columbia, she spent the majority of her younger years in New Gulf and Refugio, TX and then finally moving to Freeport, TX where she met her husband to be, Sagness Girouard, Jr,. The couple made a happy life together in Freeport, where Margaret and Sagness raised their two children, Elizabeth and Sagness III, "Tra". Margaret had a talent for hospitality. She began cooking lunch "feasts" for Sagness every weekday during his lunch hour until his death and then continued the tradition of cooking a large lunch for her son, Tra, as well as a multitude of friends and family who would drop by. She cooked lunch "feasts" for 60 plus years. She was also known for her sweetness and kindness to others. Many children and adults alike called her "Memaw", not just her grandchildren. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Freeport, as well as an active member of the Freeport Friends of the Library. Margaret was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up with politics and world events. She was preceded in death by all 10 of her brothers and sisters, ; and her husband, Sagness Girouard, Jr ; as well as her parents , Joseph and Louisa "Zoody" Spitzer . Margaret is survived by her daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Cobb ; her son, Sagness Girouard, III "Tra" and wife , Lesa Spillers Girouard ; granddaughter, Nicolette Samuels and husband , Tyler Samuels ; grandsons, Tra J Girouard, Josh Girouard and Brady Cobb and wife , Martha Cruz Cobb ; great grandson, Davyn Samuels ; and great granddaughter, Demi Samuels. Grave site service for family and friends will be held Friday, September 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Lakewood Funeral Home in Clute, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Margaret to Heart to Heart Hospice of Houston, 12929 Gulf Freeway, Ste. 300, Houston, TX 77034.
