James Eugene Woodruff

James Eugene "Gene" Woodruff, 84 of Brazoria passed away Tuesday September 26, at his residence with his loving wife of fifty-five years by his side. He was born February 10, 1933 in Lambert, Mississippi to Henry Davenport and Bessie Lea Stewart Woodruff. Gene served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955, assigned to the 3rd Motor Transport Squadron during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged, he attended Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana receiving a degree in Geology. He retired from the VA Hospital at Muskogee, Oklahoma after thirty-one years of Civil Service; relocating to Brazoria, Texas where he was employed by U. S. Contractors in various positions at the BASF facility for an additional ten years. His final employment endeavor was managing a grass farm in Danbury, Texas. Affectionally known as 'POPS" he was a most supportive father, attending recitals, coaching sports, being a scout leader and instilling hardworking ethics with Christ always first and foremost. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family and friends and spending the summers with his grandchildren taking them on trips to the beach, ballgames, and museums. Gene was gifted and spent countless hours in his workshop building crafts and remodeling their home from the ground up. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity where he was a jack of all trade. He was a Mason and active with the American Legion and VFW, truly unselfish of his time. A gentle soul with a clever wit about him Pops was a true joy to be around. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son James Nelson "Neil", one sister and six brothers. Left to cherish the wonderful memories are his wife Alma, his sons Ronald of West Columbia, Jeffrey and wife Karen of Belton, Darren and wife Sheila of Round Rock, along with daughter Renee Anthony of Sweeny. Daughter in-law Debbie Woodruff, sister Betty Olden and husband Don, along with sister in-laws Patricia and Betty Lynn Woodruff, eleven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and special family friends Paul Johnson and Larry Nutt. A special thank you to Dr. Kattegummula, Dr. LaRache, CHI St. Luke's Brazosport Regional Hospital, and A*MED Hospice. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Alzheimer's Association or charity of choice. A celebration of life in Gene's honor will be held Saturday, October 21, 2017, from 1:00 PM 3:00 PM at the VFW Post Number 8551 located at 2000 FM 1459, Sweeny, TX. 77480.
