Mariam Kay Allen

Mariam Kay Allen, 77, of Lake Jackson passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at Carriage Inn.

Mariam was born June 19, 1943 in Noblesville, Indiana to Royal and Naomi Knotts. Shortly after, she moved as a young child to Galveston, Texas.

She started her successful business career at the age of 13 when she went to work at Star Drug store in downtown Galveston. This was followed by jobs at Hotel Galvez and bar tending at the Penguin Lounge on University Blvd. This establishment just happened to be just down the street from the Theta Kappa PSI medical fraternity house where her future husband lived. And so one thing led to another and not long after she married Dr. Thomas Earl Allen Jr. This was followed by moving to San Antonio for three more years of training for her husband. Thereafter two years at Killeen Texas in the Army then moved to Lake Jackson, Texas.

While living in Lake Jackson she became a very successful real estate investor. She bought and renovated four houses in Freeport, one of which she and her husband lived in for 10 years. She bought and leased a multi-family apartment in Brazoria. She successfully bid at auction in Houston for 12 acres on Loganberry in Lake Jackson which she later sold to an apartment builder. She also owned a duplex on Winding Way that she renovated, as well as a single family home on Poinsettia in Lake Jackson. She was an excellent swimmer and became a certified Red Cross swimming instructor, Judo self-defense instructor and soccer coach. She also loved playing racquetball, scuba diving, and all of this while being a Doctors' wife and loving mother to five children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mariam is survived by her loving husband of 57 years; and their children, Stacey Lynn Beal (Larry), Carlotta Marie Cagle, Yvonne Renee Padgett, Thomas Earl Allen IV (daughter, Joy), and David Anthony Allen; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis Flores, of La Marque and Judy Applewhite, of Galveston.

She was preceded in death by Thomas Earl Allen III at birth; and great-grandchild; Charles Evan Cagle III at birth.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2pm on August 14, 2020 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Lake Jackson. Burial will be private at a later date. Rite of Committal will be at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston Texas.

The family wishes to acknowledge and give Thanks for the wonderful care of the hard workers of Carriage Inn and of the Amed Hospice Team.
