10/3/1927 - 3/28/2022
Funeral services for Mary Mildred Leggett age 94, of Lake Jackson, TX., will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 4th, 2022 at Unity Missionary Baptist Church of Richwood. Pastor David Thompson will be officiating. Interment will be held at Restwood Memorial Park in Clute, TX., following the services. Family will receive friends at Unity Missionary Baptist Church between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on April 4th. Mildred was born in Henderson, Texas to Lavinia Howell and William C. Howell in 1927. She was raised in the community of Cotton Valley, LA. Mildred was always committed to her family and remained living at home after leaving school. Her dad often worked away and this allowed her to be with Lavinia when he was away. She was introduced to Orynn V. Leggett by her aunt, Odelia Patton. Their courtship lasted several years and included Orynn crashing a family funeral in an attempt to see Mildred. They continued seeing each other through WWII during which Orynn received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. They were married in 1945 then spent the next 6 decades together. Mildred was the proud mother of 3 children. She also had 4 grandchildren. She spent a lot of time around children while working for Brazosport ISD at the A.P. Beutel Elementary School. She was hired by the First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson in the late 70's and retired from a custodial position with that church. This was fitting service for one who loved Jesus having accepted Him as her personal savior as a young person. By her own testimony she was baptized in a creek and remained in service to her Lord through most of her life at Unity Missionary Baptist Church of Richwood. She joined Unity Missionary Baptist Church on March 27th, 1960 and remained a participating member for 62 years. She served in various capacities in children's ministry, nursery care and with the Ladies Auxiliary during that time. Mildred was interested in the family history. Mildred would often have her daughter, Mary drive her to various places in Arkansas and in Louisiana exploring the family's heritage and making sure the various cemetery plots had been maintained. Mildred leaves behind her two sons and one daughter, Larry Dale Leggett and his wife, Virginia, Gary Lynn Leggett and Mary Lou Leggett. Mildred also leaves behind her granddaughters, Misty Leggett Roseburg and her husband, Don, Tia Janell Leggett Whisnant and her husband Zach, along with Grandson Chris Leggett as well as her brother, Thomas Howell and his wife, Mona. She also leaves behind 7 great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Lavinia and William, her husband, Orynn, her brothers, Earnest and Dorsey Howell and her granddaughter, Rebecca Leggett. Pallbearers serving will be Robin Carlton, David Thompson, Buster Primm and Gary Leggett.
