Jane Safford Watson

Jane Safford Watson. was born on September 14, 1947 to DeDrewry and Mary Cobb Safford in Freeport, Texas. She passed from this earth on September 24, 2023, just 10 days after her 76th birthday. Her first name was actually Billye, named after her grandfather, but always went by Jane. She had a keen sense of humor, a zest for life, and was always ready for an adventure.
Jane attended school in Velasco and Freeport graduating from Brazosport High School in 1966. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Freeport where her mother played the piano for the Sunday service and her grandfather sang in the choir. Growing up, her mother often dressed her and her older sister alike. Because they were so similar in size and barely a year's difference in age, people often mistook them for twins. Even after they were grown, when they would go somewhere together and would invariably dress in a similar color. Growing up, her dad introduced her to the outdoors, hunting, fishing and in general, the piney woods at the family farm in East Texas.
In 1971, Jane met Boyd Kite (BK) Watson, III. He was employed by the City of Freeport as their Assistant City Manager, Prosecutor, and Tax Collector. They married on August 28, 1975. Their married life began with them residing in Houston where BK worked for a private law firm eventually going out on his own. During this time, he represented the USFL Houston Gamblers and Jane said they had great fun accompanying the team on flights to games. When not traveling with her husband, Jane was a homemaker devoting her time to raising their daughter, Kimberly.
In 1991, they purchase land in Waller County, built a log home, and for the next 20 years lived on their ranch in Pattison. Jane considered herself a rancher and for a time was very involved with raising Santa Gertrudis cattle and was also a very active member of The Friends of FFA. She also oversaw the day to day needs of running the ranch. In addition to enjoying taking care of the ranch, Jane was always a car enthusiast with an interest ranging from classic corvettes to Porsches.
In 2011, Jane and BK returned to Brazoria County settling in Lake Jackson. This put them back with family and with the friends Jane had made while growing up in Freeport. Thanksgivings, Christmases, and birthdays, along with shopping, going out for dinner, and just generally hanging out, they were now able to enjoy with family and friends. They still had the ranch and went there often, but their main residence and community involvement was in Brazoria County.
Jane and BK had a wonderful life together enjoying traveling in their recreational vehicles, spending time at Kemah on their various boats, and golfing. They were both avid golfers. For many years, they were very involved with the Houston Open. In addition, Jane and BK, a proud Texas A&M graduate, were members of the 12th Man Foundation, and established an Academic Scholarship for golfers, and were Eppright Distinguished Donors.
BK passed away on March 5, 2018. They had 42 wonderful years together. Jane is also preceded in death by her parents, DeDrewry and Mary Cobb Safford, her brother, DeDrewry Safford, Jr., and her in-laws, Boyd and Orelle Watson.
In 2022, Jane was diagnosed with a malignant mucosal melanoma. Willing to do anything to overcome the disease, a year later she agreed to immunotherapy upon learning it had spread. But the treatment proved to be too much for her. The family wants to thank Sonja Vecera of Care Partners, Inc. for the help and support she gave Jane during this very difficult time.
Jane is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Marion, her grandson, Sean Marion, her sister and brother-in-law, Gayla Safford Baker (Brad), her sister-in-law, Betty Safford, her nephews, Christopher Baker (Heather), Scot Baker (Trish) and Blake Safford. Numerous grand nieces, cousins, and lifelong friends.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Lakewood Funeral Chapel in Lake Jackson, Texas. Funeral services honoring her life will be September 28, 2023 beginning at 11:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Freeport, Texas.
