Life of Myrtle Marie (Luquette) Cormier
Born in Broussard, Louisiana, Myrtle moved to Freeport at age of four when her father was with the Freeport Sulphur Company. Myrtles parent's were George Eugene Luquette and Antonia Elizabeth Landry Luquette , one sister, Mable Marie Luquette Simon, now deceased, one brother, Harry James Luquette, also deceased, and his wife Myrtis of LaMarque, TX.
Myrtle attended schools in Freeport from kindergarten through graduation from Freeport High School in 1939. After graduation, Myrtle went to Lafayette, Louisiana to visit her Godmother and met a fine young man, Elmo Cormier, whom she courted, was engaged to, and on October 16, 1941 married in St. John Cathedral there. They lived in Lafayette for 6 months until Uncle Sam called Elmo into Service on April 1, 1942 after Pearl Harbor was attacked. She followed Elmo as possible, ending up on Cape Cod Harbor and working for New England T & T Co. When Elmo shipped overseas in 1944, she returned home to Freeport to live with her parents. She worked for Dow Chemical Plant Protection, Office Services, Auditing and Invoice Accounting Departments, and was the first woman hired in the A.P. Beutel Building in 1957, and retired from Dow in 1981. Before then, she worked during high school for the NYA (National Youth Organization), also Krause, Brown's Department Store, Warren's Restaurant and with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
Myrtle was an active and a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Freeport. An active member of Catholic Daughter's of the Americas in various offices as well as a Past District Deputy and Past Regent. Following Dow retirement, Myrtle worked at Brown's, retiring there when the store closed in 1988. She was also a volunteer at Dow in the Insurance Dept., helping the elderly with Medicare claims, as a Tour Guide for Dow, and with Brazosport Memorial Hospital, becoming a volunteer in 1988. Offices held were Chairman, Past Corresponding Secretary, Past Vice President -Membership, Past President Elect and Past President . Also a chairmanship member in Cardiac Rehab at BMH. Myrtle was also very active with the "Black and Gold" Freeport High School Reunion Committee holding Chair of the Scholarship Fund, along with scrapbook Chair through 2001.
Myrtle is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Elmo Cormier, Sr. and two children: Elmo (Jay) James Cormier, Jr. and wife Sandy, from Crosby, TX and Ronald (Ron) Joseph Cormier and Paige from Spring, TX and son-in-law Bruce Sebree; Four grandchildren: Marlo Michelle (Cormier) and husband Dave Platz, of Carlsbad, CA and Jayson Ryan Cormier and wife Melanie of Newbury Park, CA. Also Allyson Long Cormier of Austin, TX and Lauren Nicole Cormier of College Station, TX plus many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Freeport. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette, Louisiana.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's with a visitation being held from 5-9 p.m. at the church.
The family request donations to: St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church of Freeport, 1019 W. 6th and Brazosport Memorial Hospital "Tree of Remembrance" or Auxiliary Fund.
