Waiford Franklin English, 87, of Lake Jackson, Texas passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012 in Houston, Texas after a lengthy illness. He was born October 10, 1924 to Percy and Sadie English in Sweetwater, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He came to the Brazosport Area to work for Dow Chemical in 1943. After 46 1/2 years he retired from Dow Chemical as Superintendent of Fire and Safety. He was an instructor for the annual Texas A&M Fire Training Seminar and was a long time member of the National Fire Prevention Association. He was a member and past president of the Brazosport Rotary Club. He was a long time member of the Lake Jackson Church of Christ, serving as a deacon for 9 years and elder for 33 years. There he founded the Prime Timers and was known for his famous "Waiford-Bell" homemade ice cream! Waiford was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Armand and Leo English, and 1 sister, Frances Stanley. He is survived by his wife of 65 and 1/2 years, Jeanette English of Lake Jackson, 2 children, Lynette Richmond and husband, Mitch of West Columbia, Dale English and wife Diane of Carrollton, Texas, "Pa-Paw" of 6 grandchildren: Lindsey Schwank and husband Bob, Ryan English and wife Sarah, Matt Alexander, Ross English and wife Heather, Elizabeth Griffin and husband Justin,Rhett English, 6 great grandchildren: Kenedy Schwank, Logan Schwank, Ford Griffin, Evan English, Janessa Taylor, Charlotte English, 2 brothers: Jimmy English and wife Margie of Lake Jackson, Robert English and wife Millie of Marion, Texas, 1 sister: Martha Jones of Houston, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The family will receive friends 6 pm to 8 pm, Thursday at Lakewood Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services will be 10:30 am, Friday, February 10, 2012 at the Lake Jackson Church of Christ with Allen Ritchie officiating. Pall bearers will be: Rodger Thompson, Robin Lee, Harold Cox, Frank Hickle, Charles Garrett, and Joe Talbot. Honorary pall bearers will be his grandsons. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Lake Jackson Volunteer Fire Department. Waiford was a genuinely compassionate person who was very unselfish and always giving to others. With his contagious fun loving personality he never met a stranger.
