John "J.W." William Maltby

John W. "J.W." Maltby was born July 14, 1936 in Jacksonville, Texas, to Mary Lou Maltby and Harry Eugene Maltby. At the age of four he moved to Freeport, Texas. He died September 15, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. After Brazosport High School he proudly served four years in the U.S. Air Force. J.W. was an avid sportsman having enjoyed many hobbies in his life: bowling, fishing and in later years, golf. He had many friends and family and he cherished the time he spent with them. He worked for Betco Constructors then he opened the first of his and Betty's several businesses; Gulf Crest Motel, Richwood Food Mart, Yummies, Sub Station and a licensed Realtor. The last 7 years he pursued his vocation and avocation working at The Wilderness golf course.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry Eugene Maltby and Mary Lou Maltby; and his four sisters, Mildred Miles, Helen Kuchar, Aline Lewis and Pauline Thornton; and beloved niece and nephews, Jay Mcleroy, Harry R. Koester, and Geline Lewis.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of fifty years, Betty; sister-in-law, Mildred McArthur; brother-in-law, Harry Koester Jr. (Dianne); and nieces and nephews, George Miles Jr., Paulette Clark, Marilyn Matts, Lou Ann Miles, Reanette Ford, Colleen Crump, Aline Oden-Muse, Stephen Lewis, Michael McArthur, Greg McArthur and Dennis McArthur; and many great nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Moss, Don Williams, Fred Riddle, John Skewes, Keith Thompson, and Skip Moore.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 19. 2012 from 6 until 7 p.m. at Lakewood Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 20, 2012, also at Lakewood.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
