Dr. Carla Jean Lamb Degges-Payne

Dr. Carla Degges-Payne went to be with her Lord and Savior at age 60 after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, May 28, 2013.

Carla was born October 24, 1952, in Pasadena, Texas to Richard and Doris (Stone) Lamb. She grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas and was a member of the first graduating class of Brazoswood High School. Carla raised two sons, Shade and Cole, who were her pride and joy. For many years she was a devoted children's Sunday school teacher at Second Baptist Church, as well as, an adult teacher at First Baptist Church. Carla worked for State Farm Insurance before deciding to continue her education in nursing. She earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Executive Leadership from Texas Tech University, a Masters Degree in Nursing from the University of Texas School Biomedical Sciences and a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch. She was Board Certified as an Advanced Nurse Executive and was a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).


Carla is survived by her husband, Steve Payne; son Shade Degges and wife, Stephanie and granddaughter, Carmella Shaffer; son, Cole Degges; parents, Richard and Doris Lamb; sisters, Cathy Gateley, Darleen Bartlett and husband, Bobby.


The family wants to express their gratitude and thanks to the nurses of Hospice. They would also like to personally thank Mary Hancock, Heather Hill, and Bev Parsons, dear fellow nursing friends of Carla's who helped so faithfully during her illness.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a nursing scholarship fund in memory of Dr. Carla Degges-Payne at the First National Bank of Lake Jackson, PO Box 3100, Lake Jackson, Texas 77566.


Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at Lakewood Funeral Home, Lake Jackson, Texas.


Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 31, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, Lake Jackson, Texas.


Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at Caledonia Cemetery in Garrison, Texas.


Honorary pallbearers will be, Kenny Lamb, Keith Stone, Cody Dingee, Heath Collins, Ryan Chappel, Matt Greene, and Tyler Williams.
