Leighton Gray Hoskins

Leighton Gray Hoskins passed away at his home Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the age of 82 surrounded by his family. He was born in Oakdale, Louisiana on November 24, 1931 to his parents, Olin Franklin and Artie Strother Hoskins, who preceeded him in death.

Leighton graduated from Oakdale High School in May of 1950 where he excelled and lettered in sports and was named the most athletic boy in his junior year. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served upon the USS Chloris in the Mediterranean Sea. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and was always eager to talk of his experiences with anyone that would listen. Leighton was a patriot and and true American. Upon returning home, he attended McNeese College in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

In 1956, Leighton went to work for Dow Chemical in Freeport, Texas as an operator and a short time later met the love of his life, Udell (Dell) Plunk from Cleveland, Texas. They would have been married 57 years on December 29th, eight days short at the time of his death.

Leighton and Dell moved to the Brazosport area in 1960 where they raised their 3 children. Being a great provider and the importance of family to him, he instilled moral values, hardwork, God, church and family relationships into his children. These same values were passed down to his grandchildren. Leighton was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved to work with his children in softball and baseball. He also coached Lake Jackson Little League baseball for a number of years. Even after his children were grown, he enjoyed working with the young boys.

After 32.5 years Leighton retired from the Dow Chemical Company in 1990. He was a member of the Operators Union Local 564, Shady Oaks Assembly of God Church, and Amercan Legion Post 306 in Lake Jackson. They had very little spare time because you would find him and Dell at events in their grandchildren's lives: sporting and music activities, graduations, weddings and births of great-grandchildren. They then started their 3rd generation of activities.

Leighton was a loving husband, father, PawPaw, son, brother and uncle. He will be greatly missed but will forever be in our hearts.

In addition to his parents he was was preceded by granddaughters Gwendolyn and Kimberly Lindsey; his sister Betty Vaughan and husband Melvin; brothers Durwood, Art Ray and wife Vergie, Franklin and wife Linda; father-in-law and mother-in-law Nolan and Mary Plunk; brothier-in-law James Pickering and daughter-in-law Debra Hoskins.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife Dell; daughter Rhonda and husband Terry Lindsey; sons Eric Hoskins and wife July, Brian Hoskins and wife Shaun; daughter-in-law Tina Hoskins; 9 grandchildren Aimee'Lindsey, Erin Matthews (Steve), Haley and Hannah Hoskins, Brian Jr. and Kenneth Hoskins (Sarah), Lauren, Chase and Chad Sanders; 12 great-grandchildren Haedyn, Jordyn, Austin, Tinley, Makenzie, Julian, Connor, Caleb, Chance, Montana, Tate and Chloe.

He is also survived by 5 sister-in-laws and a host of nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 26, 2013 from 12-2 pm at Shady Oaks Assembly of God Church, 128 Flag Lake Drive, Lake Jackson.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Raj Dalal of Lake Jackson and IPH Hospice of Angleton.
