Harry Leo St. Clair

Harry Leo St. Clair passed away Sunday, February16, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was 86 years old and when asked about himself he would say "I'm older, smarter and better looking every day!"
Harry was born the 4th of 5 children to Charlie and Addie St. Clair in Redland, Texas on December 9, 1927. He graduated from Redland High School in 1945. As soon as he graduated he joined the U. S. Navy Submarine Service serving on the USS Trumpetfish during World War II.
Our father was a very intelligent man and became an electrician when a friend was going to take the state exam. Harry read the book, took the exam and obtained an electrician license. His friend who had been working as an apprentice, did not pass the exam. Harry worked as an Electrician at Dow for 32 years in the Magnesium Department. He became an expert on rectifiers and was noted as such throughout Texas Operations. Many of you will remember him "curing" his wood for homemade fishing lures "in his rectifiers". He was good at anything he put his mind to and there was nothing that he could not accomplish. Harry saved Dow over a million dollars when he used spare parts to rebuild a rectifier. He was a member of IBEW and VFW Post # 4341. He and a friend also owned the service station at the corner of Gulf Blvd and Brazosport Blvd behind the old Baywood store.
He was always willing to help people fix anything they needed. Of course when our mother volunteered him to help the families at church he would always be gifted with pies, cookies, soup and other food items. He was always the life of the party when the couple's bridge club met and on any trip he and my mother took.
Our father loved to fish and hunt. As children he would take Chuck and Dolores surf fishing with him. Of course we didn't fish but had a great time just being with him. He took up bow hunting in the 90's and really enjoyed it.
Harry is predeceased by his parents, his wife of 51 years, Nell Basey St. Clair, Brother Bill Tamplin, sisters Kathleen Smith and Eloise Billingsley. He is survived by a daughter Dolores Knox (LD) of Freeport, son Chuck St. Clair of Freeport and son Lance St. Clair (Martha) of Georgetown. He is also survived by grandchildren Dean Knox (Shelley) of Jones Creek, Craig Knox (Jerri Lee) of Lake Jackson, Mitchell St Clair of Austin and Christian St. Clair of Nashville, TN. Great grandchildren L. D. Knox (Courtney) of Richwood, Jerry and Taylor Knox of Lake Jackson, Kaylie Knox of Jones Creek. His first great great grandchild Ryan Knox is due in March. He is survived also by his special friend Hattie Harrison. He is also survived by sister Dell Phillips of Freeport, brother-in-law Carl Basey Jr. of Nacogdoches and sister-in-law Sherri Dunn (David) of Boerne as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews.
We never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. Cherish the moments and memories.
Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family will have a visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 22 followed by a memorial service at 10:00 am. at First Baptist Church Freeport. Reverend Hobby Bilderback will be officiating.
