Martha grew up in Seymour Texas and graduated from Seymour High School. While at Weatherford College, she met her sweetheart Ned Williams. Ned lovingly nicknamed her 'Brownie'.

During the war, Martha worked as a bookkeeper in a bomber plant and a typist for the IRS.
