Billy Robert Mayse

Billy Robert Mayse passed away on July 2, 2014. He was born to William and Billie Louise Mayse in 1926 in Brady, TX.
Bill was a proud Aggie, Father, Papa, and Veterinarian. He was an athlete in high school playing football, basketball and running track. He served in the United States Army with an Honorable Discharge in 1945. He attended Texas A&M University and was a proud member of the Corp of Cadets Troop D Calvary and he graduated in 1950 with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. "Doc" as many called him came to Freeport in 1957 and built the Animal Hospital of Freeport on Brazosport Blvd. He served the pet population of Freeport for over 50 years. Prior to that he practiced in Bandera, Brownwood, and worked as a USDA Veterinarian for the U.S. government in the U.S. and Mexico.
Bill served his community in a variety of ways. He was President of Freeport Professional Enterprises, Inc. He was President, and a member, for over 24 years of the Kiwanis club and received the Distinguished Service Award. Bill served two terms as the President of the Brazosport Exporter Quarterback Club, and loved serving as a judge each year at the Gulf Coast Relays. He served the city, and its citizens, by giving his time as an elected member of the Freeport City Council. He was very influential in the hurricane preparedness committee in Freeport. Bill also served on the City of Freeport Board of Health. One of his proudest civic accomplishments was serving on the founding Board of Regents for Brazosport College. He believed all kids, especially his own, should have every opportunity for a college degree. In his acceptance speech he said, "I have a firm belief in the necessity of a Junior College for our Brazosport community for it will serve both an educational and economic benefit to us all. The educational function should be fulfilled in both the academic and vocational fields." He was very proud of the success of Brazosport College.
Billy Robert Mayse was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Jean Mayse, his parents William and Louise Mayse, and his brother Calixte Mayse. He is survived by his four children; Terry Mayse of California, Dr. Richard Mayse (Helen) of Keller, Sarah Breen (Dr. Patrick Breen) of Georgetown, and Carol Stanford (Greg) of Brazoria along with 10 grandkids; Molly (Jeff) Mayse Coyne, Chris (Kelsey) Mayse, Jeff (Inés) Mayse, Jon Mayse, Richard Mayse, Laura(Peter) Breen Eickstead, Leigh Ann (Andrew)Breen Cutting, Elizabeth Breen, James Stanford, Mark Stanford; 6 great grandchildren; Neirin Constantine, Nathaniel Mayse, Sophie Eickstead, Ella Eickstead, Brady Coyne, Quincy Coyne, and his brother Weldon (Truby) Mayse. Special thanks to The Legacy at Bear Creek and Heritage Hospice for their exceptional care. The family honored Bill's request of a private family gathering to celebrate his life.
