Hazel Dare West
8/14/1922 - 1/5/2015
Hazel Dare Woodruff West Hazel Dare Woodruff West was born August 14, 1922, in Clute, Texas to Daisy Lee Cox Woodruff and Sanford Amos Woodruff, and died January 5, 2015, in Houston, Texas at 92 years of age. Hazel lived most of her life in the Brazosport Area in Brazoria County. She married her beloved sweetheart Florie Hampton (Hamp) West in 1937. Together, they made a warm home and reared two children, Daisy Lee West Pybus and Hampton Edward West.
She was an unusual woman for her time in that she worked outside the home almost from the beginning of her marriage, beginning in a local dry goods store. She later worked at a Sears Catalog store as Credit Manager and then for many years in jewelry and liquor sales.
Hazel was very social, a wonderful cook and a talented seamstress. She enjoyed traveling and welcoming family and friends to her home and always had plenty of food for frequent drop-in guests. During WWII when housing was short, she let out a bedroom to strangers who later became lifelong friends.
Her church was always an important part of her life. She was a devoted member of many churches and served in many capacities. She was the last surviving charter member of the 1st Baptist Church of Brazoria, Texas.
She was a member of the Pythian Sisters for more than 50 years and served as Supreme Chief for two years. She was also active in other lodge organizations including The Nomads of Avrudaka.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; two sisters; and two grandsons, Douglas Patrick Pybus and Edward Hampton West.
She is survived by her daughter, Daisy Lee West Pybus, and her husband, Joseph E. Pybus Jr; her son, Hampton Edward West and his wife, Sylvia; three grandchildren, Pamela Pybus, Craig Pybus (Mariyam) and Debbie Sue West Valencia; and four great-grandchildren, Mia Pybus, Angelina Pybus, Hansan Pybus and Anthony Valencia. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
