Ramona - I loved Uncle Duane. He was loving , funny compassionate and a man of God. He will be missed by all who knew him. May he forever rest in peace. All my love to the family!

Gary -My uncle preached the Word in Texas since I was just a tiny little boy. I must have heard him preach 2,000 sermons. He preached all of them with joy. I was privileged to attend Belt Line Baptist Church in Garland, Texas where he was my pastor until he was called to lead the First Baptist Church in Clute, Texas when I was 16 years old. He baptized me. He married Ramona and me.

He loved God. He loved his family. He loved his church. He loved those he ministered to. He loved to laugh. He loved a good joke and funny stories. He rarely called me by my name, always called me 'kid' he called everybody younger than him 'kid.'

He made a significant impact on my life. When I was 12 years old I overheard a young pastor ask him what he would tell someone who asked him whether there was really anyone named Jesus and why should they believe in Him. He replied, "I have asked myself that same question." I can't quote what he said next word for word, but it went something like this:

"Sometimes I ask them 'have you ever needed a friend?' Someone who loves you, no matter what you do or say? Someone who will forgive you of your sins and gave his life to give you eternal life? Do you need someone you can count on to help you in your time of need? Eases your pain when you are hurting? Gives you peace when you are troubled? Listens to your prayers and always answers, maybe not giving you what you asked, but giving you what you need? Gives you courage when you are afraid? I have a friend like that. I'd like to introduce you to my friend. All you have to do is admit you are a sinner and that you believe and trust in Him as your Savior. It is that simple."

I realized at that very moment that I wanted this friend. I then asked Jesus to be my friend.

This is my tribute to my uncle. Out of the 2,000+ sermons I heard him speak, this is the one I remember the most. What he said was Truth. I knew it. I don't know how many people he led to the Lord in his ministry, probably thousands. If you are reading this and you already believe, you know what I am talking about. If you have not admitted you are a sinner and that the penalty of sin is death, and if you do not believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried and rose again, all I ask is, "have you ever needed a friend?"

To his family, my cousins Butch (Floyd, Jr.), Joe, Steve, Donna and Cheryl, may you find peace and comfort in your time of sorrow. Your dad was a great man. He is in Heaven rejoicing with Aunt Peggy and all of his family and friends who have passed before him.
